The Free Press Second Saturday Salon held March 14 on Zoom discussed the following;

U.S.-Cuba Relations and Global Shifts

Free Press Board member Mark Stansbery introduced Phil Wilayto, of the Virginia Defenders, who joined from New York City from the U.S.-Cuba Normalization Conference. He shared insights on U.S. foreign policy, emphasizing the shift towards a multipolar world and the extreme actions of the U.S. ruling class. He highlighted the impact of sanctions on Cuba, describing the country's severe oil shortage and its effects on daily life. Phil also shared his experience traveling through Iran in 2007, noting the friendly reception from Iranians despite tensions with the U.S., and mentioned his book "In Defense of Iran" based on that trip.

Iran's Resilience and U.S. Strategy

Phil discussed his recent book about Iran, that explores historical and cultural context to address common misconceptions about the country. He shared insights from correspondence with an Iranian contact, Habib, who described the national unity and defiance following the assassination of the Supreme Leader. Phil emphasized that the U.S. and its allies may have underestimated Iran's resilience and patriotism, noting that previous military interventions and sanctions have not led to regime change. He also touched on connections between U.S. foreign policy toward Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela, suggesting that recent actions may be part of a broader strategy linked to other global events.

Global Political Challenges and Movements

Phil and Mark discussed the current global political landscape, focusing on the U.S.'s withdrawal from international agreements like the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris Agreement. Phil emphasized the need for the anti-war movement to connect domestic and international struggles, highlighting the importance of engaging with working-class and oppressed communities. They noted that Trump's base is eroding, and the movement needs to redouble efforts to reach the public and spread awareness about the situation in Iran and other global conflicts.

Global Issues and Environmental Activism

The meeting focused on discussions about global issues, including Iran, Cuba, and environmental concerns. Phil shared insights from the conference on Cuba solidarity and normalization, highlighting the urgent need for action on climate change and the limitations of individual efforts in addressing systemic issues like fossil fuel dependence. Environmental activist and WGRN producer Joe Demare emphasized the connection between conflicts over resources and societal reliance on fossil fuels, suggesting personal actions like using electric vehicles and solar energy. Phil discussed the role of capitalism in exacerbating environmental problems and stressed the importance of building a viable left movement to address these challenges, sharing examples of local activism in Richmond, Virginia.

Resistance Against Right-Wing Policies

The meeting focused on current political and social challenges and the need for resistance against right-wing policies and environmental threats. Mark discussed Iran's new toll booth system using Chinese currency and expressed concerns about U.S. foreign policy. Phil concluded by emphasizing the importance of organized resistance and building alliances. The group also briefly discussed a national caravan to Cuba and political developments in Virginia, with Phil noting the importance of local organizing and community work despite challenges in national politics.

Ohio Cannabis Legislation Update

Mary Jane Borden, cannabis activist and Free Press writer, discussed the current state of cannabis legislation in Ohio, explaining how Issue 2, which legalized adult-use marijuana in 2023, was subsequently modified by SB56. She highlighted concerns about new mandatory minimum sentences for marijuana violations and urged attendees to sign a referendum petition to repeal SB56 before the March 19 deadline.

Election Integrity and Energy Policy

The group discussed concerns about election integrity and documentation efforts. Free Press Board President Pete Johnson highlighted the need to monitor potential election tampering, while Mark emphasized the importance of journalists documenting current events for future reference. The discussion touched on legislative efforts like the Save the Vote Act and a new Florida law requiring proof of citizenship for voting. Tim brought up Senate Bill 294, which aims to ban solar and wind energy, noting its potential impact across multiple states and mentioning his outreach to Democratic representatives regarding the issue.

Ohio Energy and Political Developments

The group discussed energy policies and their impact on Ohio, particularly regarding solar farms and nuclear projects. They expressed concerns about data centers and their environmental effects, citing a poll showing rural residents prefer living near busy highways over data centers. The conversation also touched on political developments, including upcoming primary elections and potential candidates.
